Ani DiFranco - Imagine That (Live)
And somebody right now is yawning
And watching me like a TV
And I’ve been frantically piling up sandbags
Against the flood waters of fatigue and insecurityAnd that’s when I hear my guitar singing
And so I just start singing along
And somewhere in my chest all the noise
Just gets crushed by the song

Nine Inch Nais - Just Like You Imagined (Live @ Henry Fonda Theater, LA 09.08.09)
Crank it and listen to Mike Garson tear it up on piano. In addition to decades of work as a live performer and studio musician, Garson has been a frequent Bowie collaborator for decades and has more recently worked with Smashing Pumpkins, NIN and The Dillinger Escape Plan. It takes someone with that sort of pedigree to hold their own on NIN’s stage when armed with only an acoustic instrument.
When you’re done watching this, check out what he can do with some Bach and some Besame Mucho.
Aimee Mann - Wise Up
from Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse (2004)
And because I hate playing live recordings on the air, here’s this for you all:
David Bowie - O Superman (Live)
Recorded during the Earthling tour (even without the description for the video, you can tell after the first 2 couplets/lines, the synths are ripped straight from “I’m Deranged”).
I adore this song and yet I still can’t say in words what it’s really saying. That’s the best kind of music to me.
Covering “O Superman” takes guts. They pull it off. I would really love to hear a properly produced version of this.
