The West Wing: President Bartlet calls the Butterball HotlineThis is EXACTLY the clip I wanted to watch this morning.
Thanksgiving reblog.
There’s a classic moment in the third season of “The West Wing” when Bartlet goes off the record to field a question about his opponent, in which he says that Governor Ritchie might be a “.22 caliber mind in a .357 magnum world”. Toby notices the green light on the camera and tells the President, “You were hot. When you said that just now. You were hot. They’ve got it on b-roll.”
Throughout the rest of the episode the staff must address the fallout from the President calling the governor of Florida stupid, until it’s revealed at the end that this was part of the President’s strategy all along, that he wanted these off-the-record remarks to end up on the record and ultimately to start a discussion about the smart versus stupid in the presidential race.
I was reminded of this after Obama’s got caught calling Kanye a “jackass”.
