New Service Will Stream Local TV Stations in New York:

An online television company has come up with a way to stream local television stations to paying subscribers on the Internet, potentially forming a new cord-cutting threat for cable and satellite distributors.

The new company, called Aereo, held a news conference on Tuesday in Manhattan to demonstrate its service, which will go on sale on March 14. The service will cost subscribers $12 a month and will only work in the New York City.

Aereo will stream all of the programming of the major networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC) and will include an Internet-powered digital video recorder. What it lacks completely is cable TV. But for some people, particularly those who don’t watch sports cable channels like ESPN or premium channels like HBO, a combination of Aereo and an on-demand streaming service like Netflix or Hulu could be an appealing alternative to a cable subscription.

For casual television viewers, “if you have this and you have Netflix, you absolutely have the ability to not have a standard cable subscription,” said Chet Kanojia, the founder and chief executive of Aereo, which was initially named Bamboom Labs.

This is exactly how cable tv started. In the early days of television, people would setup an antenna in one town and then run a cable to a town without a TV station and sell access.

It’s a compelling service. I’ll certainly try it, although it’s not doing much that can’t be done with a $20 antenna.

Dirty pirates can only consume their content in one way: no encryption, HD, and worldwide. But the studios give us an unending stream of different choices that provide real value to their content. Maybe you want DRM that requires a constant connection to the internet. They have that. Maybe you DRM that limits you to only certain devices. They have that. Maybe you want content that’s purposefully degraded. They have that. Maybe you want to be able to watch content only in the US. They have that. Canada? They have that too. Content that expires after 48 hours? No problem. Maybe you want to have to watch it in the theater? They got you covered. The depth and breadth of choices that the studios provide is something that the evil pirates just cannot cover. The other day I asked someone at the pirate bay for an encrypted copy of The Grey that would only play on my computer for a week and they couldn’t do it!”

This is a brilliant comment, and worthy of another brilliant comment by someone dominating an industry that’s been far more affected by piracy than either film or television: Gabe Newell of Valve Software:

We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate’s service is more valuable.

I’m going to attempt to program ITSTHEMUSIC.TV with an assload of music tonight, including tons of stuff you’ve never seen before. You’ll see live performances, clever commentary, rare interviews and more. I’ll cover both artists nominated for Grammys and lots of non-Grammy stuff too. You’ll see plenty of bands you know well and plenty you’ve never heard. And most of it you will not have seen before.

I just came up with this idea 45 minutes ago, so lets hope I don’t fall flat on my face. Coverage will start at 7PM.

Let’s not mince words here. Ken, you weren’t “the victim” of shit. You were inconvenienced by the fact that a couple years ago, one of your performers committed felony assault by beating the absolute shit out of another one of your performers the night before your show. Rihanna had to go to the hospital, you had to fill some fucking airtime. She was the victim; you were an EP with bad judgment - judgment that you’ve proven hasn’t improved in the intervening years.

Fuck you, and fuck the show you rode in on. You want to celebrate this asshole by saying “We’re glad to have him back…”? You can do it without me - I won’t participate. You weren’t “the victim of what happened” here, and it’s fucking insulting for you to say so - it’s insulting to actual victims of domestic violence and assault, it’s insulting to people who work with those victims, and it’s insulting to anyone with an ounce of compassion.

So fuck you Ken Ehrlich, fuck the Grammy Awards, and fuck Chris Brown just for good measure. I honestly cannot fathom how you could have made a bad decision even more offensive.

In 1990, AT&T announced its charitable foundation would end a 25 year-old tradition of giving to Planned Parenthood $50,000 annually, which funded teen pregnancy prevention programs. Still, AT&T wanted to distance itself from the association with abortion and end the pressure it was receiving from pro-life activists.

With AT&T’s decision to cut off funding, Planned Parenthood faced a set of problems beyond an immediate loss in funding. First, the fact that the company pulled the funding sent an encouraging signal to anti-abortion groups that their pressure tactics were working. Second, AT&T’s decision provided cover to other companies feeling similar heat from activists. The Komen incident today raises those same concerns.

When AT&T decided to cut its funding, Planned Parenthood’s president, Faye Wattleton, asked them to simply do so quietly. “I requested that they do so in a manner that would not encourage other corporations to back down,” Wattleton told TPM, “that would not empower the anti-choice organizations.” Instead, AT&T went public, and as Wattleton had warned AT&T over the phone, Planned Parenthood retaliated.

The women’s health group launched a national campaign, running ads in major newspapers with the headline “Caving to extremists, AT&T hangs up on Planned Parenthood.” Planned Parenthood received an outpouring of support and AT&T had to battle a public relations crisis similar to what the Komen Foundation faces now.
