The Food Fraud Database says olive oil, honey, saffron, tea and wasabi suffer from widespread adulteration.
Adulteration, according to the Food and Drug Administration, includes, “any substance has been mixed and packed with it so as to reduce or lower or injuriously affect its quality or strength,” as well as, added poisons or deleterious ingredients
To avoid fraud, [senior director of food standards Markus Lipp] subscribes to the idea that if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is, particularly for liquids. And for ground foods, like spices, coffee and tea, Lipp suggests buying whole food products to have a better sense of what’s really in there.
