Disney x Dali: “Destino”

A collaboration between these two titans, which began in 1946, was completed in 1999, some 50 years later, by Disney’s nephew Roy Edward Disney, using the original storyboards as well as notes taken from the journals kept by Dali’s widow.

Disney and Dali’s original work — a mere 18 seconds of test footage — can be seen starting around 5:17.

As evinced by the copyright notice at the start of the short, this incredible slice of history may not be with us for much longer, so dawdle at your own risk.

Like Fantasia for grown ups. Women haven’t moved with that kind of abandon in Disney animation in forever. How did Disney go from that to the Disney of today?

The original footage is dramatically different from the rest of the piece, but it’s still fascinating to watch.
