Ron Paul shares his thoughts on FEMA
robot-heart-politics:
WOLF BLITZER, HOST: On the whole issue of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, do you want to see that agency ended?
REP. RON PAUL (R), TEXAS: Well, if you want to live in a free society, if you want to pay attention to the constitution, why not? I think it’s bad economics. I think it’s bad morality. And it’s bad constitutional law.
Ugh. This is...

The media overreacted. Governments did not. →
David Kurtz:
Cable nets don’t dictate the forecasts of the National Hurricane Center or the National Weather Service, and state and local officials don’t rely on the cable nets when making disaster preparation decisions. So the logical leap made by critics that cable TV hype leads to overreaction by local governments is both wrong and frankly dangerous.
Most striking about this event is the CIA’s defense of its censorship of...

Tea party Rep. Cravaack gets union disability... →
Recent financial records released by Cravaack showed that he received $92,273 in 2010 from disability payments he received from Northwest. At this very same time Cravaack was receiving his checks, he was campaigning in Minnesota promising to end “big government,” and often using the usual Republican talking points of bashing unions.
Oh, and by the way, Chip Cravaack is also a...

Cringely: Losing the HP Way →
We’ve all heard how great it is that Google allows its employees to spend 10 percent of their time working on their own projects. Google didn’t invent that: HP did. And the way the process was instituted at HP was quite formal in that the 10 percent time was after lunch on Fridays. Imagine what it must have been like on Friday afternoons in Palo Alto with every engineer working on some wild-ass...

ASUSTeK started out making the simple circuit boards within a Dell computer. Then ASUSTeK came to Dell with an interesting value proposition: “We’ve been doing a good job making these little boards. Why don’t you let us make the motherboard for you? Circuit manufacturing isn’t your core competence anyway and we could do it for 20% less.”
Dell accepted the proposal because from a perspective of...

Paul Ryan Tried To Carve Out Tax Loopholes For... →
greaterthanlapsed:
House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) has tried to “create an array of special loopholes for his top contributors,” the Huffington Post’s Jennifer Bendery reports. For instance, household cleaner giant S.C. Johnson & Son is one of Ryan’s biggest donors, giving him more than $41,000 over his career, and Ryan crafted two bills that would have given the company special...

Little Dragon - “Twice”
When I saw Little Dragon in concert last week, they closed the whole show with this song. My friend Dana was there with me, and upon hearing the piano come in, got really excited and told me how much she loved this song. I, however, didn’t really know it well, I always skipped over it. It took too long to get going, was too slow, and...

Make demonstrates how to use an Arduino to make a celebrity-silencing remote control for your TV. By decoding the closed captioning track in the video signal, the Arduino is able to look for keywords such as “PALIN” or “KARDASHIAN” and mute your TV, protecting your poor ears from having to hear about them ever again.

Anil Dash: What they're "protecting" us from →
He’s the anchor baby of an activist Arab muslim who came to the U.S. on a student visa and had a child out of wedlock. He’s a non-Christian, arugula-eating, drug-using follower of unabashedly old-fashioned liberal teachings from the hippies and folk music stars of the 60s. And he believes in science, in things that science can demonstrate like climate change and Pi having a value...

It’s funny that people don’t think of saving energy at work or any other places besides home. I always turn off my computer and printer when I am done at work, it drives me nuts to see all the other ones that are left on. Also lights and other types of electronics, just because you aren’t paying for it, doesn’t mean you need to be wasting it.
